If you're planning a trip to Iceland, make sure to add whale watching to your itinerary. We booked our tour with Elding Whale Watching, the original whale watching tour company in Reykjavik, and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Getting Started

Our adventure began at the Elding ticket stand where we picked up our tickets and headed down to the pier. In a bit of a comedy of errors, we almost boarded the wrong boat. Luckily, we realized just in time and sprinted to the correct one, boarding with seconds to spare.

Tour Schedule

Elding offers tours twice a day, at 9 AM and 1 PM. We chose the 1 PM tour since we had just arrived from the airport and wanted to jump straight into our Icelandic adventure.

The Experience

The weather was surprisingly sunny, but don't be deceived— it was still quite chilly. We bundled up in hats, scarves, and gloves, ready to brave the cold sea breeze. Despite the cool temperatures, the clear skies promised a great day for whale watching.

A Humpback Encounter

With high hopes but low expectations (as the best time for whale sightings is from April onwards), we set off. To our astonishment and delight, within the first half hour, we encountered a humpback whale! Our guide informed us that her name was Frodo, and she often graces this area with her presence. Frodo wasn't shy at all. She surfaced numerous times, showing off her fluke and even rolling around playfully. It was a deeply emotional and awe-inspiring experience, one that made the entire trip worth it.

On the Lookout

Our guide was fantastic, using a clock system to point out where Frodo was, ensuring everyone had the chance to see her. Fiona, my travel companion, was glued to her binoculars, making sure not to miss a single moment. We were also given cards to mark off the wildlife we spotted, adding a fun, interactive element to the tour.
